Across the River and Into the Trees
Everyone is welcome to attend this free screening of a moving story, based on Ernest Hemingway’s novel, exploring love, war, and the final stages of life. The film will be personally introduced by Robert MacLean, CEO of Tribune Pictures, and Lucas Paletta, Associate Producer at Tribune Pictures. Following the screening, guests will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion with the producers, ask questions, and learn more about the creative process behind the film.
Based on Ernest Hemingway’s final novel published during his lifetime, the film follows American Army Colonel Richard Cantwell, a war hero confronting his terminal illness with quiet resolve. Set in WWII-era Italy, Cantwell retreats to Venice for what may be his final weekend – seeking solitude, reflection, and perhaps one last connection. When an unexpected encounter with a young countess sparks renewed hope, the story unfolds into a poignant meditation on love, war, youth, and aging.
The screening is co-organised with the Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia within the framework of the Ukrainian Cinema Club – a cultural platform that brings people together, fosters emotional connection with Ukraine, and promotes a sense of shared identity and unity.
The event is part of the research project “Hemingway’s War Narratives in Film Adaptations (WARinFILM)”, conducted by Ruslana Dovhanchyna at Tallinn University and funded by the Estonian Research Council.
