The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les parapluies de Cherbourg)

In May the Püha Sõprus Sundays in Kino Sõprus are dedicated to the gems of the Cannes Film Festival as May is the month of Cannes. 

This dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy launched the angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve to stardom. Deneuve plays the delicate daughter of an umbrella shop owner, who is glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic played by Nino Castelnuovo. When he is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly.

Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colours and told entirely through lilting songs by the great composer Michel Legrand, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is a true cinematic gem. This screening is supported by the French Institute of Tallinn.
