It was also a phenomenon: the film, based on a much saltier novel by Winston Groom, was the #1 movie in the US for 10 weeks in a row and one of the most acclaimed of its day, winning Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Zemeckis, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and a second Best Actor Oscar for Tom Hanks. It made "Mama always said life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get" one of the most recognizable movie quotes ever. Heck, even the soundtrack sold 12 million copies.
