It caused outrage in the late 1980s, when the 24-year-old Tracy Edwards proclaimed that she would take part in the world's toughest sailing competition, the Whitbread Round the World Race, with an exclusively female crew. There were not many sports where snobbery and testosterone were as prevalent as in the international elite of sailing, and the novice Edwards and her crew were met with suspicion and patronising irony everywhere, long before they even managed to set sail. The sexism is palpable in Alex Holmes's riveting documentary, but Edwards's iron will is even stronger. 'Maiden' is a true adventure, which with recent interviews, excellent archive footage and nail-biting excitement follows the crew of The Maiden, as they fight the raging of the elements, both on land and at sea. You don't have to have salt water running through your veins to let yourself be carried away around the world and to be convinced that abilities, courage and high waves have nothing to do with gender.
