Plainly speaking, Bergdorf Goodman (BG) is a department store. In fact, it is so much more: a fashion mecca, club and emporium – a true American Dream. All designers wish to sell their works at BG and all fashionistas dream of shopping there. But only a few can afford this, as this is a place for only the best (i.e. the richest of the rich). It does not happen every day that a client (Yoko Ono) calls on Christmas Eve and buys around 70 fur coats all at once.
Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Nicole Richie, Anna Wintour, Vera Wang, Karl Lagerfeld, Joan River, Iris Apfel, Giorgio Armani and Michael Kors are only a few of the many fashion celebrities to make an appearance in this documentary. For fashion designers, BG is the place of dream come true, where many famous brands have started off. Once the department store decides to sell someone’s design, it is like a long-term marital agreement. If your collection is not good enough for BG, you are nobody in the fashion world.
The documentary features the respectable old department store as well as its special employees, partners and customers. Actually, the film has captured so much more, bringing to us an important chapter of the history, developments and central figures of the American haute couture.
