In the late 1980s when people in Estonia were busy fighting against phosphorite mines and for independence, in Leningrad an underground cultural scene was emerging. The loosening of the oppressive grip of the Soviet regime and the looming collapse of the empire created a fertile ground for new ideas and aesthetic experimentation. Movements like “New Artists”, “New Theater”, band “Kino” were born, Andy Warhol sent soup to Timur Novikov and John Cage did performances with the members of the Assa movement, first rave parties were held (Gagarin party) and drugs discovered. “Timur Novikov. Zero Object” describes this effervescence that took place only 400km from Tallinn through the colourful and rich life of one of one of its most eminent members Timur Novikov.
The screening is followed by a public discussion with the director Alexandr Shein, Russian cultural critic Artemy Troitsky.
