"Kadumise lühikursus" is a new and bold collection of short films. Five films, five directors, from western to space. A fivefold powerful cinematic experience.
The collection opens with Madli Lääne's short experimental film "Dear Passengers". In her film, Madli Lääne has combined human loneliness, longing, fears, and desires into a choreographic and visual work, a kind of hymn to the need for closeness. It depicts a familiar situation - chance physical encounters in public transport, strangers, people who have become strangers, all seeking human connection in their own way. "Dear Passengers" premiered last year at the Palm Springs International Film Festival's ShortFest in the international competition program.
Eeva Mägi's opera-western "3rd Octave F" is likely the first of its kind in Estonian cinema. It is a bold and stylized story that tells of a broken family, revenge, and resistance against gender injustice. The film won the Best Film award in the national competition program at PÖFF Shorts.
Tõnis Pill's "Blue" was nominated for Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Short Film, and Best Sound Design at the 2021 Estonian Film and Television Awards (EFTA), and it screened at PÖFF Shorts. The film intertwines the paths of two strangers in a car accident. While the man tries to find a way to resolve the situation, tragic events involving the woman begin to emerge from fragments of the past.
"Drifting Away" is a psychological thriller-drama that tells the story of two individuals growing apart, set against the collision of a deceptive external world and an uncertain inner world. The film is directed by Rebeka Rummel, a director with a nostalgic yet fresh perspective, known for portraying the inner struggles of the human soul and exploring the contradictions of life.
"Heiki on the Other Side" is a dark comedy about Heiki, a 23-year-old who unexpectedly dies at a lively party at his recently deceased grandfather's house and finds himself in the afterlife, where he must confront the consequences of death. Director Katariina Aule won a special award from the jury in the short film category at the Young Directors Award competition held in Cannes last year. The film was also selected for the prestigious Beyond Festival in the United States, which focuses on genre films, and the short film competition program of the San Diego Film Festival. Recently, "Heiki on the Other Side" was chosen for the esteemed Generation XYZ competition program at the Tampere Film Festival.
The films feature beloved actors such as Priit Võigemast, Julia Aug, Tambet Tuisk, Martin Veinman, Kristiina Hortensia Port, and Ken Rüütel.
The short films are produced by renowned film studios Stellar Film, Allfilm, Nafta Films, and Three Brothers, with producers Johanna Maria Paulson, Kristofer Piir, Andreas Kask, and Elina Litvinova.
