The documentary ‘Efterklang: The Makedonium Band,' directed by Andreas Johnsen, provides a charming insight into a generous and border-crossing exchange between the Macedonian music scene and the Danish band Efterklang.
Throughout their 20-year career, Efterklang has frequently visited North Macedonia, establishing a close friendship with the hyper-energetic concert organiser Grga from the local venue MKC. Now, Efterklang has come up with an idea. With the assistance of Grga and MKC, they plan to spend a week assembling a band with local Macedonian musicians to create a performance in front of the architecturally stunning Makedonium independence monument.
The three musicians have little else planned as they land in the capital, Skopje, and start distributing flyers to recruit members for their new band. The project takes them out of the capital, into the countryside, up into the mountains, and all the way to the political top in their quest for allies and the country's distinctive folk music culture.
With his keen eye for drama and details, director Andreas Johnsen ('Ai Weiwei: The Fake Case,' 'Kidd Life,' 'Bugs,' and more) has crafted a compelling tour of the Balkan country's musical culture and an exciting dive into the alternative, creative process of one of Denmark's most exploratory bands.
The meeting between Efterklang and the many talented musicians joining the project carries a mutual openness and generosity, making ‘Efterklang: The Makedonium Band' a poignant, warm reminder of the unifying power and boundary-breaking nature of music.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with members of Efterklang, hosted by music and film journalist Andrei Liimets.
