The obsessive and labyrinthine true crime puzzler of the 20th century.
Based on the true story of one of America's greatest unsolved mysteries of one of its most notorious serial killers, ZODIAC is as much a story of obsession as it is a story of murder. The obsessive and labyrinthine true crime puzzler of the 20th century.
Based on the true story of one of America's greatest unsolved mysteries of one of its most notorious serial killers, ZODIAC is as much a story of obsession as it is a story of murder. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, the Zodiac was a serial killer in the San Francisco area who would routinely taunt the police with letters and ciphers in newspapers. One day, a young political cartoonist, Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), cracks one of the Zodiac’s ciphers and spirals into a sea of perpetual preoccupation with solving his riddles and finding out his true identity with the help of his co-worker/crime reporter friend Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.).
Always intrigued by the case while growing up in the Bay Area, the Zodiac was David Fincher’s “ultimate boogeyman.” Fincher set out with his screenwriter and producer to conduct an 18-month investigation into the unsolved case while rewriting the screenplay. The result is the story of a reporter determined to get the story at any cost. New to being an investigative reporter, he becomes all-consumed by his obsession to know the truth. Somehow along the way, it seems as though Fincher and company got caught up in that compulsion and created a spectacularly layered, investigative, and riveting narrative in their attempt to find a culprit posthumously.
This film was a technical marvel and a true cinematic masterpiece of Fincher’s career that, despite overwhelming positive reviews and an all-star cast, was left basically ignored by audiences. Don’t make the same mistake twice and miss your chance to get swept up in this gut-wrenching sea of anxiety!
